Get the picture

Not a single business stream but a whole set, our seven national advisory streams deliver more than 25 distinct services between them, to a broad range of clients and markets.

As businesses grow, so do the challenges they face. BDO’s advisory services help our clients to meet these challenges at every stage of their life cycle. Such key events might include buying a new business, or exiting one in order to extract maximum value. A business might run into financial difficulties – we can help there too, stepping in to stabilise and restructure the organisation. We have other advisers who specialise in resolving legal disputes with a financial dimension (this is called forensic accounting) or in fighting fraud. A company may wish to expand internationally, float on a stock exchange, manage its risk or achieve specific long-term objectives – our advisory streams provide expert support in all these areas and more.

While retaining their own unique identities, the streams work together internally to make the most of everyone’s talents and maximise the available opportunities. Business areas open to school leavers include Business Restructuring, Global Outsourcing, Risk and Advisory Services, and Technology Risk and Advisory Services.

Currently there is a fast-growing appetite among corporates for the services that we offer, so this is an area of real opportunity.

Learn as you earn

As a trainee in our Advisory business, you will spend 2 years working with us while studying for your CFAB qualification alongside the Higher National Apprenticeship in Accountancy (HNA). After this, your choice of qualification will be influenced by your intended business area. Depending on your specialism, you will study for one (or more) of the following:

  • ACA (from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) or CA (from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland) in Scotland
  • CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor)

We help you to enhance this learning with our Initial Professional Development programme, through which you can develop the necessary personal, commercial and technical skills. Most of all, you will learn to exercise professional judgement in real situations.
